Fall weather in many areas can bring a large fluctuation in temperatures between daytime and nighttime. These changes in temperature can cause your tires to lose pressure as the air inside them expands and contracts. This triggers the “Check Tire Pressure” light on your dashboard. This light is known as the TPMS, or Tire-Pressure Monitoring System. For many of us, this light can be an alarming surprise. However, there is no need to panic. The light does not necessarily mean your tires are leaking.

Tire Pressure Facts

During the fall season, when daytime temperatures are much higher than at night, keeping your tire pressure consistent can be a challenge. As temperature levels change, so does the air pressure in your tires. It’s the same as when you drive at higher speeds for an extended period: the tire warms, and the air within expands and increases pressure.

In the morning, the air temperature is just rising from overnight lows, and your tires are still cool from being parked. The air pressure in the tire is at its lowest for the day. More than likely, the pressure is just below the threshold for the light to be activated. Once you start driving and the tires heat up, pushing the pressure above the threshold, the light will go out. If the light remains off for the rest of the day, it’s because the air temperature is warm enough to keep the pressure above the threshold. Even if the light goes off quickly, you still may need to add a small amount of air to your tires since the pressure must be near the borderline of the recommended inflation level.

It’s finally summer and this year it looks like it’s going to be a hot one. If you’re like me, I bet you have already planned your vacation or at least scheduled a weekend getaway. At this point, I have packed my bags and planned a few fun activities for the family. I’m a little worried about one thing… my rental car. You never know if routine maintenance has been performed. I’m driving over 1,000 miles and can only hope the engine doesn’t overheat.

Engine Overheating Tips

I can’t control what kind of maintenance my rental car will have but we can all control what happens with our own vehicles. There are several things you can do to ensure your vehicle won’t overheat on a long road trip and since I’m nervous about my rental car, I want to know what to do if the engine does overheat.

Prevent Overheating Your Engine

Ensuring your vehicle is up to date on maintenance is the first step in avoiding engine trouble. There are several systems in your vehicle designed to regulate temperatures.

Engine Oil provides lubrication for the moving parts in your engine. This will reduce friction and reduce heat. Having regular and up to date oil changes will help ensure that your engine stays cool.

Your vehicles cooling system consists of various parts including fans, belts, and coolant fluids. Eventually, your automobile's cooling system will develop scale deposits which restrict coolant circulation and will require your cooling system to be flushed. Having a correctly educated specialist carry out normal examinations will guarantee your car remains effectively cooled and working for many years to come.

What to do When Your Engine Overheats

Pullover. Turn on your hazard lights, and turn off the engine.

Do not open the hood of the car.

History of the Modern Tire

Tire History Before air was introduced into tire designs, they were covered in wood, iron, solid rubber, and even leather. The modern tire was patented in 1847 by Robert Thompson but had little success. At the time, consumers preferred the durability of solid rubber. It wasn’t until years later the popularity of the bicycle would reintroduce the concept of a smoother ride.

Car Seat Safety Tips

Your child’s safety in the car heavily relies on them having the appropriate car seat or booster seat properly installed. Even if you are an expert driver with a clear driving history, you can’t stop other drivers from making poor decisions on the road. Correctly used child safety seats can reduce the risk of death by 71%, but half of all booster and car seats are not properly installed. To avert a tragic incident, make sure your kids are properly positioned in the appropriate seating. Follow these tips to provide your child with the safest ride.

Car Seat Safety Use the appropriate car or booster seat. One of the most common mistakes made is upgrading a child to a forward-facing car seat before they are ready. Your child should remain rear-facing until they are age 2 or when they reach the upper weight or height limit of their seat. Rear-facing car seats are up to five times more effective than forward-facing car seats in preventing injury for children up to 23 months. It is also important to note not all car seats fit in all cars, so try it before you buy it.

Buckle your child correctly. The straps should be snug without slack to prevent your baby from slumping or falling over. Puffy jackets can deceive you to believe your child is buckled in tightly when they are not. Buckle your child in at the normal adjustment or take off the jacket before buckling them in. You also want to make sure the harness clip, or chest clip, is in the appropriate position. This should be located at the armpit level.

LATCH the car seat. Read the installation manual to make sure you LATCH your child in properly. LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. Car seats have lower attachments which connect to the car’s lower anchor bars. Use the top tether on all forward-facing car seats. A general rule of thumb is if you can move the car seat more than an inch from side to side, it is probably not installed correctly.

Don’t ditch the booster seat too soon. Once seat belts fit your child properly, they no longer need a booster seat. For a seat belt to fit properly, the lap belt should lay across the upper thighs and the shoulder belt should lay across the chest. The belts should not be touching the child’s stomach or neck. Most children need a booster seat until they are around 8-12 years old.

If you are driving a truck, you may want to consider getting a lift kit. This would allow room for massive wheels and tires depending on how big of a lift you get. For any off-road enthusiast, this would be a great option to consider. A lift kit would raise the clearance between the ground and vehicle, allowing the vehicle to handle rougher terrain. The disadvantage of this tactic is it can be costly. New wheels and tires and a lift kit result in more parts to buy and longer time spent on labor. Lift kits also affect your vehicle’s center of gravity, so you will want to be a little more careful of your speed when making sharp turns. If you are driving a car and wanting bigger tires, increasing the overall diameter of your tire doesn’t make sense like it does for a 4WD truck. Keeping the overall tire diameter roughly the same is crucial to keeping the speedometer accurate, as well as for making sure the wheels and tires fit under the fenders. So, what can you do? You can do what we call “plus sizing.” Plus sizing is when the wheel gets larger in diameter, but the size of the tire’s sidewall shrinks to maintain the tire’s overall diameter. Larger wheel diameters can result in faster and more composed handling; however, it can also result in slower acceleration capability.

Let's talk about automotive performance. This term means a lot of things to a lot of people... from better handling, more speed, more off-road or track capability or even better fuel economy. For the purposes of this list, performance means one thing; getting where you are going sooner.

Consider the following top pick performance upgrades if you want to put more power to the ground:

Cold-air Intake - Factory air boxes are restrictive and are usually more about packaging under the hood than feeding your engine much-needed air. A less restrictive intake is an instant power adder.

Bigger Throttle-body - The intake feeds the throttle body, the modern equivalent of the carburetor. The more air and fuel you can stuff into the engine the more power you can make. A higher CFM throttle-body allows more air to pass through your engine.

Forced Induction - Turbos and Superchargers essentially have the same purpose; to stuff more air into your engine by creating pressure. Whether you create pressure with a belt, like a supercharger, or by turning a turbine with exhaust gas like a turbo, the end result is the same. Big power.

Controllers - Your onboard computers have a lot of extra power locked up by the manufacturer. You can free up this extra power with a "chip" or power programmer. With a programmer, you can also change transmission shift points, fuel injection curves and other parameters that return better performance as well as deriving telemetry information for fine-tuning your results.

Free flow exhaust - You get more power from pushing more air into your engine, but if you can't get rid of the exhaust, you can't make room for the next air and fuel charge. Free flowing exhaust systems get rid of the old, burnt stuff to make room for the new stuff. Simple physics for big power.

Better Grip - As the saying goes, "smoke ain't speed." If you are going to make big power you have to get it to the ground or all you will do is make a bunch of tire smoke while sitting stock still. With every power upgrade you settle on, make sure you have the matching rubber to get it to the road.

Storing and Caring for Your Seasonal Wheels and Tires

In many parts of the US and Canada, it is common to have two sets of wheels and tires to tackle seasonal differences in driving conditions. You know what to do with them while they are on your car, but what is the proper way to store the ones you put up for the season? Here are some tips to ensure your seasonal tires are ready to go when it is time to swap them out.

1. Clean Your Wheels - Contaminants and road grime can degrade the finish on your wheels while they are in storage. Before you put them away, clean your wheels with some mild detergent. Rinse them off and make sure they are completely dry before you put them away for the season.

2. Clean and Treat Your Tires - Tires are made of natural and synthetic rubbers and can dry out while in storage, causing dry rot and cracking which will have you looking for new tires too soon. Before putting them away, clean your tires with a liquid or foaming tire cleaner and wipe off any residue. Then apply a silicon-based spray, called tire dressing, to the rubber. This will soak into the rubber and prevent dry rot while keeping the rubber supple.

3. Check the Tire Pressure - You want to store your tires fully inflated. Underinflated tires placed on a hard surface can develop flat spots which translate into an annoying thump when they are back on the road. Usually, this is temporary, but keeping the tires properly inflated will help the rubber maintain its round shape while on the shelf.

4. Visually Inspect Everything - Check over the sidewalls, tread, and bead carefully to identify any damage or uneven wear. If tires are damaged you will have months to put a plan together for replacement instead of being faced with the expense on the day you want to put them back on your vehicle. If uneven tire wear exists, you can have your local tire center check your suspension, alignment and wheel bearings to correct the cause of the uneven wear before your swapped tires become the next victims.

5. Bag It Up - Once your tires are properly inflated, cleaned and dressed, slide a large heavy-duty lawn bag over each one and seal it by rolling the opening and taping the bag shut. This will allow you to open the bag up periodically to make sure the air pressure is staying consistent and will keep the silicone tire dressing from evaporating out of the rubber. It will also keep dust and grime from getting on your wheels and offer some protection from accidental bumps.

6. Tag Your Tires - Make sure you tag each tire with a grease pencil or tag each bag, to indicate which position the tire was on your vehicle. Tag the front left as FL, rear right as RR and so on. You want to put them back on the corner of the car they were removed from so you will not mess up your rotation schedule.

7. Stack 'Em Flat - Don't store the tires standing up. This can create flat spots. It can also allow them to roll around or fall over. Place a piece of plywood or a couple of 2x4s on the garage floor to keep them off the ground and then stack your wheels and tires horizontally.

While we enjoy the freedom of the open road, we are nearly always crossing through the homes of wild creatures which may venture out on the road at the worst time possible.

Follow these tips to avoid a collision with our natural neighbors.

1. Pay Attention - It may seem like the most basic of instructions, but in our tech-crazy world too often we are looking at things other than the road. Don't let a quiet highway lull you into a sense of false security. An animal can wander onto the road at any moment. Keep your eyes alert and watch for movement. When driving between stands of trees or crops like corn, note an animal entering the road may seem to appear out of nowhere, with very little warning.

2. Improve Your Night Sight - Make sure your windshield is clean and clear, especially when night driving. Use your high beam headlight setting when there are no oncoming vehicles and watch for the telltale glow of eyes reflected from your lights. Be extra careful at dawn and dusk when visibility is compromised and wildlife is on the move.

3. Slow Your Roll - Keep your speed under 70mph (110kph) after dark. Going any faster means you are out running your headlights, which means you cannot react fast enough to an obstacle to stop before a collision. During the day, consider slowing down in known habitats or where animal crossings are indicated by road signs. Slowing down may cost you a few minutes, but that's a much smaller cost in time and money than a high-speed collision with an animal.

4. If the Inevitable Happens - If you cannot avoid an animal hit, stay in your lane and hold your brake pedal to the floor. Nearly every car on the road now has anti-lock brakes, which will not only stop you quickly but will allow you to maintain steering control. If you have time, lay on the horn. This can break a light-induced trance in the animal and cause them to run out of harm's way. Swerving to avoid an animal may expose you to a much more dangerous collision with other vehicles or cause you to lose control of your car. Nobody wants to hit an animal but saving your own life and those of your passengers is your first priority.

5. After the Incident - If you strike a small animal it is likely you and your car will be unscathed. Larger animals like deer, elk and alligators are more likely to do serious vehicle damage and can even result in serious injury to vehicle occupants. If you have a collision with an animal do not try to treat the animal. Hurt animals can be very dangerous. If the animal remains alive after the hit, stay in your car and call authorities. They will respond to the incident, file a report, and take care of the animal in the most humane way possible. Regardless of the condition of the animal, most states require you report a large animal hit, and your insurance company will want a police report so do not be tempted just to drive away, even if your car is capable of leaving the scene.

We are lucky to share our roads and our world with an untold number of creatures great and small. A little caution and preparedness can help us get where we are going safely while preserving the lives of the creatures whose homes we drive through every day on our way to work, school and play.

Why You Should Never Skip a Tire Rotation

The cornering and rolling forces on each of your tires are different. If you have a front wheel drive car, the power and most of the force is transmitted to the front tires while the rear tires pretty much just follow along like fixed wagon wheels. A rear-wheel drive car or truck sends power to the back while steering forces are handled by the front wheels. All-wheel drive and 4wd have their unique power, steering and cornering characteristics as well.

The point is, your front left tire is going to wear differently than your right rear tire, or for that matter, any of the other tires vary at each corner of the vehicle because of the force and friction.

Tire Rotation

The solution to this problem is tire rotation. Tire rotation involves removing your wheels and tires from the car and putting them in a different position on the car. Many times, your tire service center will take the time to re-balance the wheels and tires while they have them off the car anyway. This process of rotation and re-balancing evens out the wear patterns on each tire, giving them a longer functional life.

Generally speaking, you should have your tires rotated every 5-6,000 miles. But what if you don't? Your tires and wheels will certainly stay on the car, rolling along for mile after mile without a rotation. Why bother to have them moved around?

Well, for one, tires are expensive and failure to rotate them periodically is going to ruin them well before they reach their expected useful life. If you keep applying the same force to your tire by leaving it, say, on the right front corner of the car, you're going to see deep tread damage in the typical wear pattern for that wheel position. You may see wear on the inside edge, the outside edge, feathering on your sidewalls, a cupped shape in the center of your tread or lumpy, chopped tread.

Whatever this deep wear pattern turns out to be, once it is there it cannot be repaired or rotated to fix it. Like dentists often say, you can't brush away a hole in your tooth by being diligent.

Unevenly worn tires can be dangerous, causing your vehicle to wander or pull to the side. The cornering limit, creating enough force in a corner to break traction, will be significantly reduced which translates to poor handling when going around a curve. At the very least, unevenly worn tires are noisy and make driving tedious. And again, they can't be fixed. Only replacement will solve uneven wear issues and that can get expensive.

Now, for the good news; tire rotation and balance is very inexpensive and does not take much time. Some tire sellers even include periodic rotation and balance with your tire purchase. Tire retailers are happy when you are happy and do not want to see you in their shop complaining about your short-lived, noisy tires when the problem could have been easily avoided with a quick rotation or two.

So, the lesson here is don't skip tire rotation. As a good rule of thumb, get your tires and wheels rotated with every other oil change, or about every six thousand miles, at a good local tire service center. Your tires will stay quiet, safe and reliable much longer and will deliver better performance and handling along the way.

Buying a used car can be a great experience or a complete nightmare, depending on what you know when you sign on the bottom line or hand over your hard-earned cash to the seller. While most used car establishments are reputable, there are still some that will be happy to sell you a little less car than you bargain for. As a matter of fact, some dealers and individual sellers simply don't know the history or the problems with a car when they offer it to you.

Check these ten important things before you agree to buy a used car.

Tips for buying a used car

1. The Oil Dipstick - You can tell a lot about an engine and a car owner from the dipstick. Pull it out, wipe it off and put it back, then carefully pull it again. Note the oil level. If it is overfull there may be gas in the oil which is a bad sign. Low, but not below the bottom line on the stick is actually OK. Lower than that is a problem. White foam on the dipstick is a sign of water or coolant in the oil. Run away. Now here is the tricky one. If the oil is pure, clear amber then it has just been changed. If that is the dealer policy on every car then you're ok. If your car is the only one on the lot with crystal clean oil then something was wrong when it arrived and they had to freshen the oil. If, on the other hand, the oil smells nasty and burnt, it has probably been in there way too long. You want to see a good level, oil that is used but not burned up and does not have white or brownish foam in it.

2. Smooth Paint - Drag your fingers along door jambs, around the windshield and the trunk opening. Factory paint is smooth. Body shop paint will be a little rough. Look for paint lines, especially at the edges of body panels or paint on the trim. Robots at the factory paint around the body panel before the trim goes on. A body shop paints from one direction, leaving a line at the edge and overspray on the trim. Look for broken glass in the carpets, especially under the seats where they forget to vacuum. Also, look for body color and shine that doesn't match up on the same or adjacent panels. All of these are signs that your car has been in a wreck. Move on.

3. History Report - Vehicle history reports aren't perfect but they are better than flying completely blind. CARFAX, Kelley Blue Book, and others offer history reports that include accidents, insurance claims, ownership chronology, and even some service history.

4. Little Burn Holes - Most people are aware of what a cigarette burn looks like in a seat or carpet, but if you see little round holes the size of a pen tip then someone has been smoking marijuana inside the car. While this is not, in and of itself a deal killer, the car could have been involved in something nefarious or spent its life at a rental car agency being abused. Signs of smoking anything in the car is a good reason to look elsewhere.

5. Glovebox Provenance - You cannot imagine how many car owners and dealers leave historical paperwork in the glovebox. You may find old rental agreements, evidence of major body or mechanical work, insurance claim paperwork, service history and more. All of this can give you clues as to where the car has been and how it was taken care of.

6. The Tires - Like the oil dipstick, the tires have a lot to tell. Uneven wear indicates long miles without tire rotation or a bad wheel alignment. Low pressure or sagging sidewalls are signs of a leak. Cracking in the sidewalls means dry rot, which also means the tires have probably been sitting for a long time. Bald tires tell you the previous owner didn't care about safety or maintenance and, if you are on a dealer lot, it tells you they don't care much either. Every dealer should want you to drive out on safe tires.

7. Air Bags - Airbags are a one-shot deal and have to be replaced if deployed. Most airbags rip through plastic or cloth trim to save your life. Look for ill-fitting trim, steering wheel center covers, dash covers and other airbag areas like the sides of seats and over the doors. Anything out of place is probably a sign that the car has been whacked and the airbags had to be replaced. You may want to think twice about a purchase.

8. Back Seat Wear - If the back seat is stained or worn then usually there were kids back there. Now, there is nothing wrong with kids, in fact, you may want to consider foregoing a clean back seat and buy solid proof of a family-owned vehicle. People with children tend to drive more cautiously, avoid accidents and take precautions against breakdowns. Sure, you may find an errant Cheerio or two under the seat cushion, but it is easier to clean a car than to fix it. One note: if you smell spoiled milk in the car it will never, ever go away. Never. Leave the car on the lot.

9. Smooth Engine Operation - The engine should start, run and stop with no odd noises or fanfare. Likewise, the transmission should shift smoothly and positively and not lurch, hesitate or slip. Be honest with yourself. If you feel the car doesn't run right it probably doesn't. Trust your instincts and find a better choice.

10. Dash Lights - There are many dash lights and warning messages that let you know something is wrong or has been neglected by the previous owner of the car. You may be tempted to take a chance on a ride that seems to run and drive fine but has a check engine light, anti-lock brake light or other warnings on the dash. So You Think Some Traffic Laws Are Nuts?

Yes, there are plenty of traffic laws in certain areas that don’t make much sense. Here, though, we present a collection of traffic laws from other parts of the world that are just bizarre:

--In Thailand, the law states that no driver, male or female, shall ever drive without a shirt. Weird Traffic Laws

--In South Africa, “the driver of a vehicle on a public road shall stop such vehicle at the request or on the signal of a person leading or driving any bovine animal, horse, ass, mule, sheep, goat, pig, or ostrich on such road.” Or face a $500 fine.

--Splashing a pedestrian with water is illegal in Japan.

--In Montana, you can forget about driving with a sheep in the truck unless the sheep has a chaperone... and the state of Alabama had the presence of mind to make it illegal to drive while blindfolded.

--On the island of Cyprus, it’s illegal to raise a hand from the steering wheel. No waving at anyone, no eating or drinking anything while you drive.

--Danish drivers are required to check under the car before starting it…just in case anyone is sleeping under there.

--In Spain, if you need glasses to drive, you’re required to keep a spare pair of glasses in the vehicle at all times.

--In Singapore, it’s illegal to ever come within 50 meters of a pedestrian. 50 meters equals about 162 feet. Good luck with that.

Make Sure Your Car's Ready For Winter!

You know that winter and bad weather are coming. Is your car ready? Here’s a quick checklist of things to get up to speed on:

Motor oil: Motor oil has a tendency to thicken in cold weather, making it harder to circulate to upper engine parts at startup. If you haven’t ever used synthetic oil Driving in the Winter before, this might be a good time to start. The flow properties of synthetic oil are a lot more consistent, meaning it doesn’t thicken in sub-freezing temperatures or thin out when it’s hot outside.

Wipers: Even the best windshield wipers only last about a year. If your wipers are showing cracks or chips or losing strips of rubber, go ahead and replace them. Don’t forget to refill your washer fluid reservoir…you’ll need it once the weather gets bad.

Cooling system: If you can’t remember the last time your coolant was changed, it’s pretty easy for a technician to test its condition. Remember that coolant, a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water, prevents freeze-ups in wintertime as well as boil overs in hot weather.

Heater and defroster: Since the heater is part of the cooling system, a flush of the system will help remove any scale or corrosion that may have built up in the heater core.

Tires: Make sure your tires are in good shape, with plenty of tread depth, and check the inflation. Remember that air expands when hot, so be sure to check tire pressure when the tires are still cold. That also means they’ll lose a couple of pounds of air pressure when the temperatures are really cold.

You can’t do much about winter weather, but you can at least up your chances of getting through it unscathed when your car’s in good shape for winter driving!

Ever think about all the different vehicles that use rubber tires? Tractors, industrial equipment, everything else that rolls on rubber?

Each specialized type of tire requires a specialized design for its specific purpose. Aircraft tires, for instance, have to be very robust and handle a great deal of weight and stress, but for only a short period of time. Aircraft tires are often filled with an inert gas such as nitrogen, for more stable inflation levels, and are designed with specialized fusible plugs which provide a safer failure mode (rather than a sudden, catastrophic tire explosion).

Off-the-road tires, for vehicles such as graders or mining equipment, operate at low speeds but have to be able to withstand severe service conditions while handling heavy loads. They’re designed with tough, thick carcasses to resist cuts, tears, gouges and punctures while still providing decent control and ride quality for the operator.

Agricultural tires are designed for good traction while not compacting soil too heavily. They feature a large footprint to disperse the weight of the vehicle, and may feature a paddle tread for tractor tires or a knobby design for turf machines such as mowers.

Industrial tires, such as for forklifts, backhoes or dock equipment, often have to encounter chemicals and other substances that can be damaging to ordinary tires. They’re tough and rugged and often come in solid, non-pneumatic designs.

Tires for heavy duty trucks and buses need to put in long hours and many miles hauling heavy loads. They’re designed to minimize dangerous heat buildup and offer good traction on wet or dry pavement. A relatively new innovation for heavy trucks is the “Super Single,” a wide single tire that replaces the dual rear wheels of older truck designs. Super Singles offer better fuel economy as well, with a weight savings of around 200 pounds per axle.

What To Do With Those Old Tires

Every year, about 290 million tires are discarded; of those, about 233 million are recycled in one way or another. Shredded tires can be used for playground surfaces, welcome mats, hot-melt asphalt, bark mulch and even made into building material for “green” construction.

But what can you do with your old tires? Here are some ideas:

--Fill a tractor tire with sand to make a great sandbox for kids Tire swing

--Hang a tire from a rope as a tire swing

--Stack a couple of tires on top of each other, bolt them together and paint them a cheerful color, then use them as a planter

--Lay two rows of tires next to each other, somewhat staggered, and use them for broken-field running as part of football conditioning

--Bolt two tires together, then affix a round glass top for an instant patio table

--Tires can be hung or slightly embedded in the ground and used as planters (note: don’t grow vegetable plants in tires)

--With a little imagination and some other building materials, you can use old tires to set up an entire playground of climbing structures, obstacle courses, and other fun designs

While tires are tough, they can still be cut with a Sawzall or other heavy-duty saw. Whatever you decide to do with used tires, it’s important to recycle them somehow. Used tires collect water and can quickly become mosquito breeding grounds in the summer. You’ll be doing your part to help the environment and make the world a better place.

Your Car’s an Investment – Protect It

You rely on your car every day, and you have a lot of money tied up in it. It’s probably one of the more valuable things you own…so make sure you get the most out of that investment:

Oil changes: Changing your motor oil at regular intervals will ensure long engine life by cutting wear and friction and helping to prevent the buildup of sludge Antique Car and carbon on internal engine assemblies.

Cooling system: Older cast-iron engines could overheat with no serious consequences, but not so with today’s aluminum blocks and heads. Your engine’s coolant has a finite life and should be changed and flushed at regular intervals to prevent accumulation of scale and corrosion in the radiator, heater core and water pump.

Finish: A good coat of wax does more than keep your car looking good. It also helps prevent rust from forming, helps to repel debris and dirt and keeps the paint in good shape.

Filters: The air filter is crucial to protecting your engine from dirt and particulates…but once the air filter gets clogged, it can smother performance (literally) and hurt fuel economy. The fuel filters and carbon canister filter should also be checked and changed if necessary.

Timing belt: Many vehicles are designed with a timing chain to coordinate the crankshaft and camshaft; timing chains usually last the life cycle of the vehicle. Timing belts, however, have a finite service life and even a few thousand miles past that recommended change interval is borrowed time. A broken timing belt can very literally result in a wrecked engine.

A little preventive maintenance and forethought can go a long way toward getting the most miles out of your vehicle!

A Brief History of the Tire

Ever wonder what the designations stamped on your tire sidewall actually mean? We’d like to break it down for you.

Let’s take for instance, “P195/60R15 87S”. This is a full service description of a tire.

In this case, “87S” denotes a tire’s load capacity and speed rating. The higher the number, the greater the load capacity – an 87 load capacity means that tire can support 1,201 pounds. Speed ratings range from L (75 mph) through V (149 mph), and an S speed rating means the tire is good for 112 mph. W, Y, and Z-speed rated tires are available for extreme performance cars and are rated as high as 186 mph.

As for the rest of the information:

Tire

--“P” denotes Passenger Tire

--195 is the tire’s width from sidewall to sidewall... in millimeters

--60 is the aspect ratio... the proportion of the height of the tire cross-section as compared to the width of the tread area

--“R” stands for Radial construction

--15 is the wheel size... in inches

There’s other information on the sidewall of a tire, such as its Mountain & Snow rating (if applicable), date of manufacture code and maximum allowable pressure. For the average consumer though, it’s good to know the meaning of the service description so you can be an informed tire buyer when it’s time to replace them. Remember, your vehicle was designed for a very specific tire size, and it’s best to stay with that size when you go shopping for new tires!
